Buying Used Metal Detectors

Purchasing used metal detectors is an economical means of stepping into the interesting vocation of treasure hunting through metal detecting. You may get unexpected results like discovering a Morgan silver coin in the heaps of earth that you dig up.

You may end up finding a belt buckle belonging to the civil war era. You may even be lucky enough to find an antique diamond ring on the sands of the beach.

There are many dealers who sell used metal detectors and accessories. You can find them in local stores and pawn shops, in your local paper, and of course on the internet.

The Advantages Of Buying Used Metal Detectors

The biggest advantage of buying a used metal detector that it is economical. These second hand detectors come at half the price of new ones. And before you get scared away, used metal detectors does not mean worn out machinery.

Most of them function perfectly. Some owners sell off their metal detectors if they do not use them and they need of money. But before you buy one, check how it operates. If it is in good working order you stand to save a bundle of money. Cheap metal detectors does not mean cheap in quality, only in price.

If you do decide to get a used metal detector you’ll have plenty to choose from. Although metal detectors for individual use have only been around a few decades, some of the oldest ones are just as good as the newer models made today. Don’t let the age trick you into thinking you are not getting a quality piece of equipment.

Anytime you buy something used it’s natural to be worried. There are a lot of questions about how well the machine operates and of course a new one will have a warranty backing it up. But many individual sellers, especially resellers that sell refurbished machines, will back up their product to help reduce the risk. You need to weigh the risk against the amount of money you’ll be saving. Just remember that new packaging and brighter displays do not ensure the quality of the metal detector.

Some Disadvantages Of Used Metal Detectors

The biggest problem with a used metal detector is the aforementioned risk. All machinery wears down over time, especially if it is used heavily. And if it breaks and requires immediate repair, the money you saved will quickly be spent. As we said, with a new product, you can take it to the retailer along with the warranty card.

That’s something you just can’t do when buying used. And there are not many places where they repair metal detectors properly. You have to look up the net if you need a good place where you can take your broken metal detector for mending.

That’s why it’s always best to buy from someone you trust. And before you make your purchase, read reviews. They will generally tell you if the equipment is known to have troubles or if it typically lasts a long time. And when at all possible, inspect the detector before handing over your money. Even give it a test, the seller should have no trouble allowing you to do this.

Let me tell you a quick story. When I bought my first metal detector, before I arrived to make my purchase the seller had buried an inexpensive ring in his small back yard. He encouraged me to use the metal detector to find it. And in less than 5 minutes, I had found the ring. Needless to say I was convinced and walked home with a used metal detector in hand. It lasted several years before I sold it to get one with additional features.

Just remember that as a buyer you need to do your homework. If you do then you’ll be sure to get a quality piece of equipment. And you’ll even have some money left over to get some metal detector accesories that will make your treasure hunting even more enjoyable.
